- Lance Armstrong Bikeway 4th Street I-35 Underpass Cleanup
This continues our maintenance of the 4th Street I-35 Underpass which is the East-West connector across the I-35 corridor for the Lance Armstrong Bikeway (view map).
Although we have alleviated many of the larger litter, soil creep, and glass issues it continues to require frequent cleanups to maintain its current state. It remains a heavily used bicycle and pedestrian route, due to it being on a main bike route and a non-street based connector across the I-35 corridor, and in 2012 we are continuing this adoption to ensure it is accessible and clean for all users.
- Nueces Street Adoption (Downtown Bike Boulevard)
We are expanding our commitment to keeping major bicycle thoroughfares attractive, accessible, and litter free in Austin through our new two year adoption of Nueces street. The target stretch runs from 5th to MLK (1.0 mile; view map) and is one of two streets that combine to form the Downtown Bike Boulevard. Unlike the LAB underpass adoption, this will be more focused on general litter abatement rather than the more intensive site management we undertake in the shadows of I-35.This clean-up is supported in part by the City of Austin Public Works Department.
- Rio Grande Boulevard Adoption (Downtown Bike Boulevard)
Our parallel Rio Grande adoption complements Nueces as the second portion of the Downtown Bike Boulevard running between 12th and 24th streets (0.9 miles; view map). Their proximity will allow us to double up and clean both stretches as a single clean-up event. We are also going to take on the responsibility of documenting roadway issues (potholes, recessed or missing utility covers, and cracks), reporting them to the City, and following up with the issue tracking tickets to ensure they are repaired. This clean-up is supported in part by the City of Austin Public Works Department.
- Clean Sweep
Clean Sweep is KAB’s annual citywide cleanup that takes place all over Austin. In 2011 there were 136 cleanup locations all around Austin (31 zip codes) which collected over 25 tons of trash (from public spaces) and over 45,000 cigarette butts! In 2012 it is occurring on Saturday, April 14. We will be hosting three Clean Sweep sites:- 4th Street/I-35 Underpass Bikeway (litter abatement and paint based beautification)
- Nueces bike route from 5th Street to MLK (litter abatement)
- Rio Grande bike route from 12th Street to 24th Street (litter abatement)
