Bike Month

ID: 2011-0007
Start Date: 2011-03-14
End Date: 2011-05-31
Status: COMPLETED

Work to make Bike Month a success within the greater Austin area. We attended planning meetings with the City of Austin staff, the Austin Cycling Association, and others to map out the month calendar of activities and needs. We participated in sponsorship recruitment which resulted in KIND Healthy Snacks joining the push to get more people communing to work by bike by providing free KIND Bars at the various Bike-To-Work stations. Plus, deployment of the materials to over 30% of the City’s Bike-To-Work stations was done by members of the racing team by bicycle!

Events during Bike Month:

  • Bike-To-School Day (Martin)
    5/06/2011

Helped to co-lead the ride and keep the kids safe. Rode from a City of Austin Parks and Rec facility to Martin Middle school on city streets and the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail system with 20-30 students attending Martin Middle School.

  • Martin Bike Fix-A-Thon
    5/13/2011

Hosted a Bike Fix-A-Thon and Pizza party with Martin Middle School. Students who showed up with bicycles (working or broken) were treated to free pizza while volunteers worked to tune up and repair their rides. In addition to racing team members, volunteers from the Yellow Bike Project joined us in working on bikes. Although we only ended up with a handful of students during our first Fix-A-Thon, we were able to do much needed maintenance on the school’s in-house bike fleet during the event.

  • Bike-To-Work Day Stations (Blue Dhalia Bistro, Dolce Vita)
    5/20/2011

Hosted two morning Bike-To-Work Day stations. One in East Austin at Blue Dahlia Bistro and the other in Hyde Park at Dolce Vita. We welcomed over 60 commuters on their way to work with free hot coffee, KIND Bars, and other assorted snacks in addition to thanking them for getting out on their bike and making Bike-to-Work day a success.
